Geography at Millbrook

Geography overview

The Geography curriculum at Millbrook school is designed to develop our children’s curiosity and fascination concerning the world. we tend to are committed to providing children with opportunities to research and build enquiries about their local area of Cheshunt, London and the wider world in order that they will develop a purposeful sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area special.

Through high quality teaching and a progressive curriculum, we develop essential characteristics of geographers at intervals our children. The curriculum design builds up children’s use of geographical vocabulary and permits them to speak their findings effectively. within the Early Years we concentrate on the planet around us and changes we tend to see throughout the year. In KS1 we focus on native geography, moving any abroad in KS2.

Our aim is that our children can leave us with a real interest in geography. during this dynamical world, the study of Geography will deepen their information of the places and people across the world and encourage them to explore, raise queries and undertake new experiences each currently and within the future.

At Millbrook we believe that Geography encourages children to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum will include human and physical geography and will inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We will promote the children’s interest and understanding of their local area, diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

How we ensure access for all:

At Millbrook, we use 'PlanBee' throughout the year groups to offer guidance to all teachers and to support our pupil's learning. We recognise that in all classes, pupils have a wide range of abilities and so we seek to provide suitable learning opportunities for all, by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the individual. We also use a range of materials and resources to also meet individual needs.

A variety of teaching styles are used to encourage maximum participation, where skills, knowledge and understanding of Geography can grow freely. Demonstrations and techniques are given alongside a wealth of resources. Examples of pupil’s work are shown to allow critical thinking and pupils develop the skills needed to self-evaluate their own and others’ work, suggesting what has been successful and how to improve.

How we assess

We assess children by assessing children with quizzes and this will enable teachers to build on their prior learning. We use assessment grids to allow us to understand how to help children in the next unit of learning or the year ahead.
